He has now crossed the 38,000-point threshold, bringing up the mark in the first quarter with a midrange jumper from the top of the key with 5:40 remaining in the first quarter. 

He is only the second player in NBA history to reach that mark, alongside Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, who holds the all-time scoring record for points in NBA history with 38,387. 

The 38-year-old is on the cusp of overtaking Abdul-Jabbar’s longstanding record, now just 363 points away from history.

LeBron, who is averaging 29.0 points per game in his 20th season, will likely break Kareem’s record in early February and in a recent interview, he reflected on his upcoming piece of history, struggling to contextualize the feat among his career accomplishments.

“I don’t know because I have not set out to do that — it wasn’t a goal of mine when I entered the league,” he said in an interview with ESPN’s Dave McMenamin.

“Making All-Star team, being Rookie of the Year, being First Team All-NBA, First Team All-Defense, winning a championship for sure, being MVP of the league (were goals).

“The scoring record was never ever even thought of in my head because I’ve always been a pass-first guy. I’ve always loved the excitement of seeing the success of my teammates.”
