Originally teased by LEGO on July 13 and formally announced on July 14, the LEGO Nintendo Entertainment System is a set that allows builders to assemble an NES, along with its wired controller and a TV displaying the original Super Mario Bros. This is part of LEGO and Nintendo’s first year of collaboration, which coincidentally also happens to be the 35th-anniversary of Super Mario Bros. on the NES.

The LEGO NES itself has can receive a replica Super Mario Bros. cartridge that builders will be able to eject via a realistic spring-loaded eject feature, just like the original NES, and the accompanying old-school TV set features a playable scrolling version of world 1-1 from Super Mario Bros. There is also an amazing Easter egg hidden inside the NES, and the manuals for both the NES and the TV feature retro Nintendo Power-style interviews with the set’s creators as well as a history of LEGO and Nintendo.

The set has a suggested retail price of $229.99 and releases today. It is currently still available on the LEGO website as of this writing, but that could quickly change given how quickly Nintendo products tend to sell out.

Hopefully, this is just the beginning of a long friendship between LEGO and Nintendo, and other beloved Nintendo franchises get the LEGO treatment someday soon. One could only dream of how amazing a Legend of Zelda or Metroid LEGO set could be.
